2025 Boracay Open
Thursday - Arrive
Getting to the island is always quite a feat, requiring flying to Manila, flying to Caticlan, gas trike, ferry, and e-trike
The hotel check in process was silly and a spectacle. We sat in a waiting area while Mufasa played on a projector. Then we were called to check in which took more time than at other hotels. Next she had to “prepare the keys” so we were escorted back to the waiting area but this time we were provided refreshments. A pandan drink and a sweet muffin with egg. Quite good.
There seems to be 1 employee per every guest room here - we were escorted to our windowless room on the 4th floor. (Ok there’s a full wall of windows but to the hallway) “Good morning ma’am, sir”
After nesting, we walked to get a late lunch at Rainbow Cafe and Lounge - known for its drag shows. The food was really yummy (½ roast chicken with puri puri sauce, vermicelli) we also ordered mango smoothie with alcohol which apparently was a new concept to all the employees but they agreed it was tasty
From there we walked to Willy’s rock near station 1, then turned around to find a spot for the sunset. Maya’s didn’t disappoint offering 2nd floor views, happy hour and ceviche.
Walking back home, we could really notice the changes compared to 2017. No more dining, smoking or drinking on white beach. And wider walking area / less chaos. Chatted with some locals about it and they also informed us they thought trump was an idol because Duterte liked him. PS: Duterte got arrested on Tuesday
Friday - Tourney Day 1
slept in!
Went to Sunnyside for breakfast! This place was a staple our last visit. In particular, Higgs loved it! So we knew we had to go first thing. Got the go-to hash brown entree plus a sesame milk and Allegra got a cool purple “horchata”
Our first game was at 10:45 vs Throwmance and we lost by 1 or 2. They were a mix of Canada, Australia and US. It was SO HOT AND SWEATY or “heat-strokey” and we were really feeling our heavy breakfast
Cooled down after the game with pool time and Negina’s home made electrolyte drink
Next game was 1:30 vs a Manila team called KillHouse. And they were young and fast. They won by a few. That game was also quite hot
Again we cooled down with the pool, had some lunch and an Ube/coconut smoothie
Last game was 4:50 and the weather was super duper nice. We played a team based out of Seattle - who had some spirit issues. We won by a couple and watched the sunset
Then we showered and 6 of us headed to happiness hostel for an ice bath! We did win hoff breath and it was so wonderful.
Dinner at Cathy’s cafe on the other side of the island. It’s very calm and quiet on this side compared to White Beach. The moon is full!!!
Saturday - Tourney Day 2
hotel breakfast
First game was earlier (2nd round) and it was just lovely. We won! Against drunk bitches (dragon ball) an international team
Pool and smoothie time after
Also finally bought some bracelets so we could give away player gifts
Was approached by a player on Fu Fighters who was dying to have a mearle jersey so i gave him my dark
Second game also felt nice! We played Fu Fighters and we came back to win on universe. We were “professional” and “a privilege to play” and they were “thankful for the lesson” they also played 3/1 some points which we were thankful for
Third game was around 4pm and brutally hot! Against Full Sand who was from New Zealand, Australia and others. They were very tall and crushed us.
Straight to the ocean to cool down. I won the kiwi bird keychain!! This was about 5pm
We decided to quickly shower and meet on the 3rd floor balcony of the Austria for the sunset. It was a great decision. We had some survival snack and a drink.
Some of us walked and some of us took a tuktuk to dinner in Station 2 at Nalka Seafood - which was quite good and flavorful. We ordered so much! Oysters, scallops, fish, ceviche, apps, drinks, and it still ends up being like $15 a person.
Finally some walked back / others took tuktuk to the party at Casa Pilar
Sam hung out with Dragon Ball / drunk bitches
We leg drained and went to bed and got 9 hours of sleep
Sunday - Tourney Day 3
Hotel breakfast!
10:30 game! On field 1 against Jen & Berry’s who is US and Asia based - and has been around as long as us - we remembered them from 2017.
Stanley made it as we were huddled up - with one of the opponents teammates giving us a pump up speech
It was pretty dang hot! But we ended up winning by a good margin!
Mikayla and I were chosen as the 2 spirit players and we played a cute game where we learned what were actually berries and what were not
After the game, some ocean time.
Then we took tuktuks to Bulabog beach to get a pic with the I heart Boracay sign and get lunch at Monkey tree cafe - which was really yummy
We walked a bit bc this side of the island is really chill and the water is clear. Known for kite surfing.
We got a pic with the famous Leaning Coconut Tree as well
I saved a starfish too
Back to casa Pilar for finals. We rented umbrellas and stood on the water side. It was a tight game with Pirates winning by 2! Very flashy!
Next, the jersey market popped up. I was able to offload all my mearle jerseys and I’m taking home a Cambodia jersey. We got Danny a 7-11 jersey by using Grundy’s jersey. We will def need a reorder.
Mosho, Allegra and I walked to get pic with a sand castle like we did in 2017 and we got a sweet treat
Said goodbye to Scott!
Came back for sunset and caught up with Sam and robin bc they played volleyball with locals and then donated their volleyball to the club - so sweet!!!
Allegra and I walked to give a dammit mearle shirt to #80 on Pirates. She was sooo fast and she’s so young. She was very happy to accept it!
Legs and Danny got a massage and dinner was at Noni’s (healthy and pretty good)
Said goodbye to early group then went to bed
Monday - Depart
hotel breakfast, delicious banana bread
Tuktuk to ferry dock (electric)
Ferry
Tuktuk to airport (gas)
Sat in a bus for a while before getting on the plane
Arriving Manila - not as chaotic as I remembered. Kind of nice. Got bubble tea and shake shack snacks.
Cebu air always plays pop music before and after the flight. They do trivia as well and Negina won a prize. Pretty easy flight!
Some of my fav pics from other folks (Matthew, Mikayla, Robin, Negina)
To Remember:
You need cash for Boracay in general, but definitely for transporting here
Allegra recommends the private booking of transit
Eat all the ube, mango, pandam & calamansi > drink all the smoothies
Climbing group brought back the concept of ‘ynkl-ing’ every meal (you never know your last..” and I think we kept that going in PH.
Bring meds for travel diarrhea
BYO sunscreen & electrolytes
Can’t believe how big bubble tea got here!
From 2017 —> 2025 ageless cuties!
